How to Go to Social Events Alone (and Actually Enjoy It)

Oct 16, 2026

Going solo can feel intimidating, but it's one of the best ways to meet new people.

Showing up somewhere on your own takes courage, but it often leads to more new connections than arriving with a group.

Why going solo works When you're with friends, it's easy to stay in your bubble. On your own, you're more open, and other people find you easier to approach.

Choose the right events Look for events built around an activity, like workshops, tours, classes, run clubs or trivia. They give everyone something to focus on and a natural reason to talk.

Tips for the first few minutes - Arrive a little early, when groups haven't formed yet. - Find the host or organizer. They can introduce you to people. - Stand near the food or drinks. It's a natural place to chat. - Use an easy opener: "Have you been to one of these before?"

Give yourself a goal Aim for one or two good conversations, not working the whole room. If you swap names with someone you liked, follow up afterward.

Leave when you want You came on your own terms, and you can leave on them too. Each event gets a little easier.
